Since today is International Dog Day, we thought we’d honor our furry friends the best way we know how… through mapping!
First, we took a look at the most Googled dog breed over the last 12 months, broken down by state. The top searches were all familiar, but who came out on top?
The most googled in 21 states was… *drumroll*
🎉 Bulldogs! 🎉
When you segment that family further, it looks like people are most interested in French Bulldogs.
Terriers came up just short, being the most Googled in 20 states. Within that group, people were interested mostly in Boston Terriers. So it looks like there’s a bit of an adorable, smush-faced trend in the breeds you’re Googling.

New Yorkers have also suddenly done a lot of searching for Kaapo Kakko, which Google has placed in the “dog” category. This probably has more to do with New York’s passion for hockey, since Kaapo Kakko is actually a hockey player who was drafted to the New York Rangers this year. Oops!
Most popular dog names by state
We also took a look at 2019’s most popular dog names by state, as reported by pet insurance provider Nationwide.
Luna and Bella were overwhelmingly the most popular, ranking number one in 18 and 16 states respectively.
Once Luna and Bella are accounted for, there’s a lot more variety in the top dog names, with the best one obviously being Cooper (since it’s an eSpatial pup’s name)!
