Every sales organization knows how important it is to have an accurate idea of certain metrics at any given moment. For instance, you may want to know:
- How much revenue is being brought in and are those gains in line with the weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual goals you’ve established?
- Which products or services are and aren’t selling well?
- What are your sales reps doing right, and what practices are in need of improvement?
- Perhaps most importantly, how are you faring across various geographical areas, and what other determinations can you make by closely examining data points based on location?
To do all this, it’s critical for you to closely look at a map of your various sales territories. After all: The majority of sales data can be mapped geographically in one way or another. But it’s not enough to simply have that visual in front of you.

What is a pin map?
In today’s fast-paced economy, it’s essential that every sales organization take a more granular look at their customers, categorizing them into individual territories based on industry, buying history, location and other identifying factors. A map is the best way to illustrate territories spread over a particular geographic area. While in decades past these maps were hand-drawn and kept up to date with manual pencils and markers, digital tools like eSpatial eliminate the need for such time-consuming maintenance.
Using the Territory Map Maker feature of the eSpatial platform allows you to create maps that are highly detailed but also easy for reps to refer to – even when they’re out in the field and can only use their mobile devices for work. Each customer or lead is marked by a pin and they can see the exact areas that fall within their territory.
What can you use custom pin markers for?
While a map that simply marks sales territory borders certainly isn’t useless, it’s best if your reps can see more specific information about each territory, its leads and accounts. The pin map markers in eSpatial can easily be customized so that they display relevant information.
For example: if you’ve plotted out your accounts and included revenue information, you can color-code your pins or use different symbols to indicate high, low and middle value. It could be as simple as using currency symbols with different colors, or even different sizes: a smaller dollar sign for lower-revenue territories and so on.
Along similar lines, if you were mapping territories across a region with buyers representing a wide variety of industries, you would want to point that out on a map, using different graphics along with your pin map marker icons to demarcate the separate sectors. Even more simply, you could point out “hot spots” for the sales of specific products and services, using a graphic of the relevant products’ logos as pin markers. The possibilities are virtually endless: Whatever criteria you might want to take into account on the sales maps you create in eSpatial, chances are you can find a way to represent it using the pins.
How to create a custom map with pins in eSpatial
You can easily use eSpatial to put together maps with pin markers that feature custom graphics as your map pins. These can be simple images to indicate relevant factors within a territory, or corporate logos (yours or those of your customers).
1.Create your pin graphic
The first step is simple: Create a graphic that’s ideal for use with the platform. You can use either the SVG, PNG or JPG image file formats. There are some other guidelines you should stick to as well:
- All images should be equal in width and height, and both of the dimensions should fall between 100 and 300 pixels.
- Any images you use will be subject to review by eSpatial before you can add them to your account.
- You must make sure that you have permission to use any images for your pins. (Anything you license from a provider like Shutterstock is fine, as well as any original graphics or imagery you directly receive from a client.)
2.Add your own icon
Next, in the Control Panel, look at any data set you use (customers, warehouses and so on) and then click Style & Color. From there, go to the Style tab, open the Pin Style drop-down menu and choose the “Add your own icon” option. This generates a template that you’ll receive via email – once you’ve got it, attach your image or graphic according to the guidelines detailed in the message.
On normal business days, it will take about 24 hours for your customized map icon to be added to your eSpatial account. On weekends or holidays, the process may be longer (up to 72 hours). We will send you another email to let you know that the graphic has been uploaded to your account.
3.Style with your new icon
Accessing your new customized map pin is easy: Once you receive the email notification confirming that your graphic has been uploaded, you simply go back into the Style & Color menu. Click the Style tab and you’ll find the new pin along with the default markers. You can use your brand-new customized map pin exactly the same way you would use any other pin.
As indicated in the pin style drop-down menu, you can upload any number of other icons to eSpatial that you may need and use them to express different datasets. As an example of a map using two customized pins, one graphic of a person indicates direct sales to customers – varying in size based on the scope of the client base in a given territory – and another image, depicting a cart, symbolizes warehouse sales.
Every sales team is different, of course. But all managers should recognize how important it is to use tools that allow for more analysis of territory-related data. Custom mapping in eSpatial makes this process more efficient, ensuring a better allocation of reps and resources.
