In the last few days, the Smithsonian Magazine has published its annual list of the best small towns to visit in America. We’ve plotted these wonderful places on the interactive map below – along with the nearest airport to each.

How the towns were picked
The towns made the list according to their number of cultural attractions, historical sites, nature opportunities and food-and-drink destinations. Also considered were those places commemorating important anniversaries, openings, renovations, recoveries and other milestones in 2015.
What information the map contains
Aside from visualizing each location. we’ve also plotted the nearest airports to each town, so that travelers can start to plan their trip immediately! In addition, if you click on any star, you’ll find a link to more information about each town, as well as a link to some images.
Interesting things the map tells us
A cursory reading of the map suggests that the Eastern side of the country is punching well above its weight when it comes to nice towns.
However, open the map full-screen. Then click the closed eye symbol beside the Regions of the USA, in the Legend panel. Viewing a territory map dividing the country into the four major regions – Midwest, Northeast South, West – we can see that the best small towns are more evenly divided among the nation:
So no part of America need take offense at the listings!
