Location-based services (LBS) are any service that adapts to a user's location and situation. The information that is provided is filtered and delivered in the way most appropriate to the user. By definition LBS requires the ability to handle large volumes of transactions and users, providing an extremely fast response. Typical public services may include:

* Getting driving directions, traffic information, weather, and travel schedules * Facilitating emergency 911 services and locating stolen mobile phones * Paying highway tolls * Scheduling and locating the optimum mode of transport * Locating people and businesses listed in electronic directories

Other services include identifying other people or services that are close to you. This might include letting you know if your children are outside a certain radius or screening calls based on your location. Marketeers are interested in pushing services or offers to people who match a profile and are passing an outlet.
