Verizon Wins “GITA 2008 Innovator Award” with Web Mapping Application, built on eSpatial’s iSMART, to Streamline Processes for Telecoms Network Planning

March 10th, 2008, Seattle, USA - eSpatial, a global enterprise geospatial software and technology company today announced that leading telecommunications company, Verizon, has won the prestigious GITA 2008 Innovator Award, with a web mapping application for Network planning, based on eSpatial’s iSMART product. VEGA (Verizon Enterprise Geospatial Application) is designed to streamline processes for planning and engineering of Verizon’s all fiber-optic network that supports its FiOS service offering in parts of 17 states.

The international awards competition recognizes the user organizations that have pushed the envelope of geospatial technology through the innovative development of a unique technology, service, or application to produce a new benefit stream for geospatial technology users.
Verizon has won the award for its enterprise geospatial application, VEGA, which is built using eSpatial’s iSMART. VEGA provides a single integrated access point into network planning and rollout process thereby streamlining workflows. Traditionally, separate systems have been used for each phase of the process with time consuming and potentially error prone handovers of information between the relevant departments.
The VEGA application eliminates traditional “stove pipes” seen in the integration of Geospatial applications with other business systems. They have migrated from a vertical process view to a horizontal, where the application provides the flow between steps in the processes. In essence, the geospatial and business applications have been fused into a single entity delivered as an Enterprise grade application with access from any web browser in the organization.
iSMART provides a range of sophisticated pure Web Editing capabilities allowing a custom geospatial application to be authored for delivery in a web browser without the need for any browser plug-in or additional client software. The spatial editing capabilities in VEGA are powerful enough to replace traditional desktop-installed specialist GIS Tools for a large variety of business solutions. This includes the ability for multiple users to carry out CAD-like editing and maintenance activities on their Geospatial data though a simple interface, using only a web browser. By using this advanced Web 2.0 based approach, Verizon is migrating core aspects of their planning and engineering activities to the web and away from desktop software, thereby increasing the reach & use of their geospatial applications and data across the organization.
Rao Tanuku, Verizon, said, “Verizon is delighted to win the GITA 2008 Innovator Award with the VEGA application. VEGA delivers on its goals by utilizing a novel approach to the use of Geospatial technology using the latest IT standards and web technologies made available to us by eSpatial”.
Orla Power, Head of Marketing, eSpatial said, “We’re excited that Verizon has won this Award based on a system that uses eSpatial’s iSMART. This is a testament to both our technology and company commitment to deliver an innovative solution addressing Verizon’s business challenge of how to increase efficiency in network planning process by integrating core design and other key processes in a single environment.”
Dan Bowditch, Awards Committee Chair said, “Verizon’s use of eSpatial’s Geospatial Technology is an outstanding example of what can be achieved, and we believe that it will benefit the industry in general. We offer our most sincere congratulations to Verizon for being selected to receive the 2008 Innovator Award.”
The Innovator Award will be presented to Verizon during the Opening Session of GITA’s Geospatial Infrastructure Conference 31 in Seattle, Washington, Monday March 10th 1.30pm-2.45pm in the Washington State Convention & Trade Center.
